LYRICS: ---------- Baking a whole summer's day into one cake Arranging a snare-less drum kit with the Herr Dear God, so unfair… Choreographing inclement weather Clues to what’s next hint at an old nursery rhyme That Edelmann would design In Woodstock you can taste orange and lemon Channeling some band from ‘67 (Chorus) RD Davies, Beatles & Percy Bysshe - What a reading list From Fuzzy Warbles to Byrds and Beach Boy bliss - With an English Twist Circling high in the Stratosphear Back down to earth forever in Ermine Street Anchoring your feet Chalkhills and children: the common touch From citric psychedelic to Nonsuch (Chorus) RD Davies, Beatles & Percy Bysshe - What a reading list From Fuzzy Warbles to Byrds and Beach Boy bliss - With an English Twist Hidden with Holly In Henry’s folly A sleeve etched by the mapmaker John Speed And Then She Appeared… Apple Venus: her name rings a bell Disappointed Ballads, the canvas we're dealt ((Chorus) RD Davies, Beatles & Percy Bysshe - What a reading list From Fuzzy Warbles to Byrds and Beach Boy bliss - With an English Twist

LYRICS: ---------- They call her Natasha - When she looks like an Elsie She talks like a duchess – when she’s still a waitress She thinks she’s a guest — she’s a tourist at best She wears her heart out on her sleeve – when her remarks are off the cuff Now she knows how to be dumb That little fool She dances like she learned from a series of still pictures She’s so easily led, but much too scared to follow Her mouth is made up but her mind is undone He's got double vision - When she wanted him double jointed Now she knows how to be dumb That little fool She used to take the breath out of me - Now I think she'll be the death of me Every time I phone her I just want to put her down Now she knows how to be dumb That little fool Oh, I said "I'm so happy, I could die." She said "Drop dead," and turned and left with another guy. Now I know how to be dumb This little fool

LYRICS: ---------- Johnny’s tunes—preceding Steven’s words Waiting for—her master’s voice to come But this time—a journey on a train alone An overture that kept on teasing and teasing She put on her coat and turned up her collar And rode the Draize Train out into the rainy night... So Jeane walked — back to the old house Girl afraid—she knows these things take time And she reeled—at what this handsome devil said This night had really Opened her eyes she Began to accept her Self and William Only heaven Knew the difference it would make Writing the missing words in her head Wondering what Steven would have said She could have been a poet or she could have been a fool...

When you speak I get no satisfaction Heed your own words and button your lip Like her you've shown you’ve got a heart of stone She took a country and she let it bleed Don't show sympathy for that devil Don’t show, your sympathy for her All the aftermath of that sweet neo-con Left the salt of the earth, black & blue Tears went by, she closed down our steel wheels All dirty work - no emotional rescue Don't show sympathy for that devil Don’t show, your sympathy for her You’re at Her Satanic Majesty's Request Don’t show, your sympathy for her Don’t Vote Like Jagger ….

about

This EP is an exercise in writing songs about songwriting, initially triggered by hearing the Nick Hornby and Ben Folds' song, "Doc Pomus": a song about songwriting...

Click on each song to read lyrics and a more detailed explanation, but essentially:

"An English Twist" is a tribute to XTC in the style of "Mayor Of Simpleton" and "Then She Appeared", telling the story of the wonderful album-naming technique they employed on their later releases along the way. XTC songs and albums are referenced throughout.

"Finding The Right Words" strings together a litany of Elvis Costello's lyrical insults in the ultimate "hammer of songs" - albeit with a twist in the tale. Musically it borrows from two of The Attractions' finest sides: "Beyond Belief" and "New Lace Sleeves".

"The First Time She Heard The Draize Train" tells the story of a modern-day Smiths fan hearing Mr. Marr's instrumental track for the first time and trying to figure our where Mr. Morrissey's words were. Eventually, she writes lyrics of her own, drawing on Mr. Morrissey's work for inspiration. Smiths songs are referenced throughout.

Finally, "Sympathy For That Devil" expresses horror at Mick Jagger expressing horror at the reaction to Mrs. Thatcher's death. Stones songs and albums are referenced throughout.
