about

Between 1986 and 1999, on the albums Skylarking, Oranges & Lemons, Nonsuch and Apple Venus 1 & 2, XTC moved away from their early angular new wave sound and reinvented themselves in the studio with a knowing nod to the Beatles, the Byrds, the Kinks and the Beach Boys.

This song (which reverses the chords from
“Mayor of Simpleton” for the main riff and samples that song in reverse in the coda) addresses how the title of each of those wonderful albums was derived from a lyric
on the previous album.

lyrics

LYRICS:
----------

Baking a whole summer's day into one cake
Arranging a snare-less drum kit with the Herr
Dear God, so unfair…

Choreographing inclement weather
Clues to what’s next hint at an old nursery rhyme
That Edelmann would design

In Woodstock you can taste orange and lemon
Channeling some band from ‘67

(Chorus)
RD Davies, Beatles & Percy Bysshe - What a reading list
From Fuzzy Warbles to Byrds and Beach Boy bliss - With an English Twist

Circling high in the Stratosphear
Back down to earth forever in Ermine Street
Anchoring your feet

Chalkhills and children: the common touch
From citric psychedelic to Nonsuch

(Chorus)
RD Davies, Beatles & Percy Bysshe - What a reading list
From Fuzzy Warbles to Byrds and Beach Boy bliss - With an English Twist

Hidden with Holly
In Henry’s folly
A sleeve etched by the mapmaker John Speed
And Then She Appeared…

Apple Venus: her name rings a bell
Disappointed Ballads, the canvas we're dealt

((Chorus)
RD Davies, Beatles & Percy Bysshe - What a reading list
From Fuzzy Warbles to Byrds and Beach Boy bliss - With an English Twist
