about

This song tells the story of a Smiths fan hearing “The Draize Train” for the first time without realizing it’s an instrumental. As she walks home, she picks lines from other Morrissey / Marr tunes to create possible lyrics for the song.

This arrangement is based on the lush guitar settings Johnny Marr used on early Smiths
b-sides (think “Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want”) and his arrangements for Billy Bragg (“Walk Away Renee” and “Greetings To The New Brunette”)

lyrics

LYRICS:
----------

Johnny’s tunes—preceding Steven’s words
Waiting for—her master’s voice to come

But this time—a journey on a train alone
An overture that kept on teasing and teasing

She put on her coat and turned up her collar
And rode the Draize Train out into the rainy night...

So Jeane walked — back to the old house
Girl afraid—she knows these things take time
And she reeled—at what this handsome devil said
This night had really
Opened her eyes she
Began to accept her
Self and William
Only heaven
Knew the difference it would make

Writing the missing words in her head
Wondering what Steven would have said

She could have been a poet or she could have been a fool...
